Juvenile Justice Coalition
Community Education Project
The Juvenile Justice Coalition has developed a
Community Education Project to impact the problem of
Ohio youth proceeding through the juvenile justice
system without understanding their rights and
potential outcomes. The project is funded by The
George Gund Foundation and the Ohio State Bar
Foundation, with support from the The Marketing
Collective and 361 Studios.
The goal of the project is to develop and implement
a state wide education initiative, targeting youth and
their families that will help them understand their
rights in the juvenile justice system, in order to
make an informed decision about whether to waive the
right to counsel. The objectives are:
Provide printed information that is clear and
easy to understand, about youth rights and the
legal process in the juvenile court, as
guaranteed in the state of Ohio.
Make this information available to youth and
their families in easily accessible locations.
Produce a video which can be used in the
courts, classrooms and community centers.
Establish an effective methodology of
distributing and utilizing the material.
Evaluate the use and effectiveness of the
Community Education Project, for the purpose of
replication in counties throughout Ohio.
In December 2005, the project produced a brochure,
Not knowing your rights can cost you big time.
A distribution plan for the brochure will be
developed. It is now available on this website.
The DVD, Your Rights & the Juvenile Court,
is being completed and will be piloted and evaluated
for effectiveness as a learning instrument, along with
a facilitator guide. This will occur in Winter 2006.
